The best AI app to learn Czech:
a plain chat or an agent with Talkfirst

We are not going to tell you Talkfirst is smarter than Claude. It isn't. Here is what a plain AI chat does well for Czech, where it runs out, and why the pairing of your agent and Talkfirst works better than either alone.

Updated October 20, 2026

Short answer. For Czech, the strongest setup is the AI agent you already use, such as Claude or ChatGPT, plus Talkfirst as a connector. The agent thinks and explains; Talkfirst stores your vocabulary, plan and progress, scores your pronunciation word by word, records your pauses and brings words back on schedule. A plain chat is a good conversation partner but forgets what you learned and does not grade how you sound.

People search for “the best AI app to learn Czech” and expect a winner. The honest answer is a pair: the AI agent you already talk to, and a place where your learning is kept, heard and delivered. This page explains why, starting with what the plain chat does well.

What a plain ChatGPT or Claude does well

  • A partner on any topic. A clerk at the foreign police, a landlord, a colleague on the first shift — the agent plays any role at your level.
  • Explanations. Why the past tense needs jsem in the first person, why Brno changes in Bydlím v Brně, what a letter from the office means — patiently and with examples.
  • Rephrasing. You write how you would say it, and the agent shows a more natural version.
  • Role-play scenes for situations you are nervous about.
  • Voice mode, so you can talk instead of type.

That is a lot. For understanding a document once or rehearsing a call, a plain chat is often enough. The prompt matters: set the level, the role and when to correct you.

You are a clerk at the foreign police. I'm extending my residence permit. Speak only Czech, A2, one question at a time, formal “you”. Don't correct me during the conversation; after 8 replies list my mistakes with explanations in English.

Where it runs out

Memory is not a record

ChatGPT and Claude have memory, but it holds notes about you, not a log of what you learned and when to review it. A new chat starts almost from scratch, and in a long chat the early messages drop out. The list of words you saved last month is not something the agent can work with.

Voice mode understands, it does not grade

Voice mode tries to understand you, not to assess you. It answers the meaning it understood, but it does not show the pauses, the hesitations or the words it had to guess. So a short vowel where a long one should be, a ř that came out as something else, or a three-second pause before every verb go unnoticed.

No word-by-word pronunciation score

There is no score per word, so “your pronunciation is great” from the assistant measures nothing.

Corrections drift

Without rules in the prompt, corrections are inconsistent: sometimes every small thing, sometimes nothing.

What Talkfirst gives your agent

Talkfirst connects to Claude and ChatGPT as an MCP connector. It does not replace the agent's thinking; it gives the agent material to think about:

  • Your “cases”, laid out. Pauses by word timing, corrections, “Say it better” rephrasings by context, new words, weak words and response times (word_stats), the history of your quizzes and conversations.
  • A knowledge bank for your agent. Your profile, notes and plan, which the agent reads at the start of every new chat.
  • A vocabulary you can throw words into, which turns into flashcards and quizzes.
  • A pronunciation window with a score for every word.
Feedback on a reply in a conversation: a 0.9-second pause, a more natural version of the sentence and ticked target phrases.

Feedback on one reply in a Talkfirst conversation, on the English course. A frame from our test setup, not a screenshot of a live chat; for Czech it looks the same.

And there are things an agent would take a long time to build: A1 and A2 Czech decks by topic, conversation scenes and a Czech A2 mock speaking exam (beta). All of this works without the agent, in the app in the browser and in Telegram. Lessons are the other way round: Czech has no ready-made library, so your agent builds them on request.

Prompts that only work with the pair

Before we start, read my profile, notes and what's due today. Then tell me in two sentences what we should do in the next 20 minutes.
What mistakes do I keep making in my conversations? Use my conversation history, not your memory.
Which words am I slowest on? Make a short conversation that forces me to use them.
Here is an email from my landlord. Explain it, save the new words to my vocabulary and put a reply call into next week's plan.

Each of these leans on data that a plain chat does not have: history, response times, the vocabulary and the plan.

Three setups side by side

  • A plain chat. Great explanations and role-play, voice mode. No review schedule, no pronunciation score, no record across chats.
  • Talkfirst alone. Conversations with feedback, pronunciation, flashcards, quizzes, the mock exam, in the browser and Telegram. What is missing is an agent to talk things through with: explaining a letter, adding your own words, building lessons and a plan.
  • Your agent plus Talkfirst. The agent thinks and explains; Talkfirst keeps, listens and delivers. Words from a letter go into your vocabulary, your pauses go into the next conversation, and the next chat starts where the last one ended.

Questions

Is ChatGPT or Claude better for learning Czech?

Both are good conversation partners in Czech. With Talkfirst, voice windows work in Claude on the web and in the desktop app; in ChatGPT the connector needs developer mode, whose availability depends on your plan and region.

Is Talkfirst a replacement for ChatGPT?

No. Talkfirst is where your learning is stored and heard. The agent stays the one who thinks and explains.

Can I learn Czech with a plain AI chat alone?

You can start, especially with good prompts. You will have to keep your own word list, review it on a schedule and check pronunciation some other way.

How much does the pair cost?

The chat costs whatever your plan with it costs; Talkfirst has a Free plan with 35 voice minutes a week. Plans and limits are in the main guide.
