DTZ B1 speaking
with an AI partner
A practice partner for the DTZ speaking exam: explanations in English, Ukrainian or Russian, an AI as the second candidate in Teil 3 and a forecast on the DTZ scoring sheet.
The DTZ speaking exam takes about 16 minutes, usually in pairs, with no preparation time. The most valuable task is Teil 3, “Gemeinsam etwas planen”: 20 points out of 100, and you have to agree on a plan with another candidate. On Talkfirst, an AI plays that candidate. It makes suggestions, sometimes disagrees and expects you to keep the conversation going. After each attempt you get a forecast on the DTZ scoring sheet without pronunciation: 90 points, B1 from 75 %. You also see whether you are on track for B1 by your exam date.
- Teil 1 · about yourselfabout 2 minutes and a follow-up question
- Teil 2 · photo and experienceabout 3 minutes, compared with your home country
- Teil 3 · plan togetherabout 6 minutes, the AI is the second candidate

Practice for the speaking part itself
German on Talkfirst is new and in beta: tasks and flashcards may still contain mistakes.
A second candidate for Teil 3
The AI is not an examiner asking questions but a partner: it brings its own ideas, sometimes objects and has to be convinced. That way you practise what earns the points: keeping the conversation going.
A forecast on the DTZ sheet
Five task scores (5, 5, 10, 10 and 20 points) and three language scores: fluency, accuracy and vocabulary. Pronunciation cannot be judged fairly from a transcript, so the forecast is out of 90 points, and “would pass B1” starts at 75 %. Check your pronunciation yourself or with a native speaker. The AI scores twice and takes the average. It is a forecast, not an exam result.
A pace to your exam date
Set B1 as your goal and enter the exam date. Talkfirst works out how many minutes of speaking you need each week and shows whether you are on track.
Speak from day one
No need to learn the grammar first. You talk with an AI at your level, see your pauses and mistakes explained afterwards, and words from your conversations go into flashcards. If the flashcards feel like pressure, switch on Zen mode.
How the DTZ speaking exam works
The DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer) is the final exam of the German integration course. It is run by g.a.s.t. on behalf of BAMF. The speaking part takes place on the same day as the written part.
- Teil 1 · Über sich sprechentalk about yourself from prompts, then an examiner’s question: 10 points
- Teil 2 · Über Erfahrungen sprechenyour own photo, your experience and a comparison with your home country: 20 points
- Teil 3 · Gemeinsam etwas planenplan something together with the other candidate: 20 points
- Language across the whole talkpronunciation 10, fluency 10, accuracy 15, vocabulary 15: 50 points
- There is no preparation time. There are two examiners: one leads the conversation, the other only listens. Each scores you separately, and the result is the average.
- Without B1 in Sprechen there is no overall B1, however well the written part goes. You need B1 in the speaking part and in at least one of the two written parts.
- Only integration course participants can take the DTZ. BAMF pays for the first attempt. If you are not in a course, you need a different B1 exam, such as telc or Goethe; we have not checked their formats.
- In Austria, ÖIF offers the DTÖ model test, a version of the DTZ for Austria, to prepare for the Integrationsprüfung B1: the same three parts, in pairs, a 100-point sheet and B1 from 75.
- The Talkfirst mock exam copies only the format. We write our own tasks and use freely licensed photos from Wikimedia Commons, because the official model tests are copyrighted. You can download them for free from g.a.s.t., and they are worth using too.
- The format and scoring step by step: DTZ B1 speaking guide. Phrases and sample dialogues for the third part: Teil 3 gemeinsam etwas planen.

Good to know
Is there a mock DTZ B1 speaking exam?
Yes, in beta: the three parts of Sprechen in the DTZ format, answered out loud with no preparation, with the AI as the second candidate in Teil 3. You get a forecast on the DTZ scoring sheet without pronunciation: 90 points, B1 from 75 %. The mock exam does not score pronunciation, so check it yourself or with a native speaker. The examiner’s questions in Teil 1 and 2 are pre-recorded; the live conversation is Teil 3. It is a forecast, not an exam result. On Free you get a full mock exam once every 7 days.
Who is my partner in Teil 3?
An AI playing the second candidate. It suggests its own ideas, sometimes disagrees and does not run the conversation for you. In the real exam your partner is another course participant. With an odd number of candidates, one takes the exam alone; g.a.s.t. does not say who plays the partner in Teil 3 in that case.
How is the DTZ speaking part scored?
On the g.a.s.t. sheet: 50 points for five tasks (Teil 1 — 5 and 5, Teil 2 — 10 and 10, Teil 3 — 20) and 50 for language (pronunciation 10, fluency 10, accuracy 15, vocabulary 15). B1 starts at 75 points, A2 at 35. Two examiners score separately, and the result is the average. Our mock exam uses the same criteria except pronunciation.
Who can take the DTZ?
Only integration course participants: with a course entitlement, or after at least one course module paid for yourself. BAMF pays for the first attempt. Outside the course system you cannot take the DTZ and need a different B1 exam.
Does it work for Austria?
For the speaking part, yes. ÖIF’s DTÖ model test has the same three parts, the paired format, a 100-point sheet and a B1 threshold of 75. The written part of the Austrian exam is different, and we do not cover it.
Are these the official model tests?
No. The g.a.s.t., telc and ÖIF model tests are copyrighted, so we take only the format: parts, timing and criteria. The tasks and situations on Talkfirst are our own; the photos are freely licensed images from Wikimedia Commons. Download the official tests for free from g.a.s.t. and compare.
Do I need to learn the grammar first?
No. Speak from day one: the AI adapts to your level, and the feedback after each conversation shows your mistakes and better phrasings in English, Ukrainian or Russian. The grammar comes with practice.
Is it free?
Yes. Free gives you 35 voice minutes a week, a full mock speaking exam once every 7 days, conversation, pronunciation practice and flashcards. Pro costs 500 Telegram Stars for 30 days.
Why beta?
German is new on Talkfirst, so the tasks, flashcards and scoring may still contain mistakes. If you spot one, message @niknikdev and we will fix it.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, as a Telegram Mini App or as a web app in your phone’s browser. Conversations need a microphone.
