The permanent residence exam in Lithuania
For permanent residence you take the state Lithuanian language exam and the exam on the basics of the Constitution. The language exam matches level A2. NŠA (Nacionalinė švietimo agentūra) runs it at municipal base schools. The same exam is taken for citizenship.
Written part
On a computer, on the same day as the speaking part. Reading and writing take 1 h 30 min, listening 25 min.
Speaking part, 12 to 14 minutes
- About yourself2 to 3 minutes, no preparation
- Second task4 to 5 minutes, including a minute to prepare
- Third tasktwo parts of 2 minutes, a minute to prepare for each
Two examiners are in the room: one talks with you, the other grades. Tasks are handed out on a sheet and the conversation is recorded. Timing is strict: if you run out of time, the examiner moves on to the next part.
Scoring
Each of the three situations is scored 0 to 3, and the examiner leading the conversation adds 0 or 1 for the whole talk. The maximum is 10. A2 needs 6 or more, and going by the NŠA examples the two best situations together need at least 5. The final result is A2 only if you reach A2 in every part of the exam.
What they ask
Part one asks about you: your name, where you are from, family, work, home. NŠA does not publish the tasks of parts two and three. The exam programme sets the topics: housing, weather, work, free time, travel, health, education, shopping, food, and services such as the post office, bank and clinic.

What it trains
The same three parts
Four questions about yourself, a talk on a topic with a minute to prepare, and two situations: call, book an appointment, arrange something. You see each task in Lithuanian with a translation and hear it read aloud, and the timer runs as in the exam.
A score from 0 to 10
A score for each part with an explanation, a point for the conversation, the total and "would pass" by the NŠA rule. At the end, tips on what to practise before the exam.
Whole or part by part
The full exam takes about 15 minutes. Short on time? Take one part at a time.
Where it stops
Tasks for parts two and three follow the programme topics, since official samples are not public. The AI grades a transcript of your answer, and pronunciation is not part of the score.
Conversation practice with an AI partner, flashcards and work scenes are on the Lithuanian on Talkfirst page.
