- Role-play90 seconds to prepare, you start, then 3 lines from the examiner
The state Polish B1 exam
This is the exam in Polish as a foreign language (egzamin z języka polskiego jako obcego). The State Commission for the Certification of Proficiency in Polish as a Foreign Language prepares the tasks and issues the certificates; authorised organisations — universities, schools, language centres — run the exam. The rules are set by the regulation of the Minister of Science of 14 February 2025 (Dz.U. 2025 poz. 217).
Who needs it
For the long-term EU resident permit (rezydent długoterminowy UE) you need Polish at B1 or higher: an exam certificate or a school or university certificate with Polish as the language of instruction; children under 16 are exempt. For recognition as a Polish citizen (uznanie za obywatela polskiego), the voivodes ask for a Commission certificate at B1 or higher, or a school certificate with Polish as the language of instruction.
Written part
Four modules: listening, reading, grammar and writing. For adults at B1, at most 190 minutes.
Oral part, up to 15 minutes
After the written part, on the same day or the next. The candidate draws one of the task sets, and the time for the whole oral part is printed on the set. According to examiners' descriptions, a set has three tasks — describing a photo, a monologue on a topic and a role-play — with about 5 minutes to prepare. The regulation does not say this, and official task sets are not publicly available.
Pass mark
At least 50 % of the points in each written module and in the oral part. Failing one module means failing the exam. Results are given in per cent.

How to register for the exam
- Choose an exam organiser (podmiot uprawniony): a university, school or language centre. You register with them, not with the Commission.
- Register early: the organiser enters you into the Commission's database.
- You pay the fee to the organiser; the Commission publishes session dates on certyfikatpolski.pl.
- The organiser gives you the result; the Commission issues the certificate.
- On 1 January 2027 an amendment to the Polish Language Act takes effect (Dz.U. 2026 poz. 676): a new regulation will set the exam rules, and the certificate will cost 100 złoty. Anyone registered before 1 January 2027 takes the exam under the old rules.
Based on regulation Dz.U. 2025 poz. 217 and the act amending the Polish Language Act (Dz.U. 2026 poz. 676). More in the guide Polish B1 for long-term residence.
What it trains
The same three tasks
A photo with two questions about it; a monologue — a story, a description, a film summary or an opinion with reasons; and a role-play: a public office, the doctor, a landlord, a colleague, a shop. 96 tasks across the 16 topics of the B1 standard. Each task is shown in Polish with a translation and read aloud, and so are the examiner's lines.
Pan or Pani
Before you start, choose how to be addressed: czy Pan…, był Pan or czy Pani…, była Pani. The tasks and lines come in that form. With a friend or colleague it is informal, as the task says.
A score in per cent
Each task is scored on four criteria from 0 to 3: task completion, fluency, vocabulary and grammar. The result is a percentage of the maximum and a “would pass” mark from 50 %. Each task gets a short explanation, and you get tips on what to practise.
Honest limits
The official criteria and points are not published, so the scale is ours, based on the B1 standard. The tasks and photos are ours. The AI scores the transcript of your answer; pronunciation is not scored. Only the oral part is trained, and we do not issue certificates.
A full mock exam takes about 15 minutes, or you can take one task at a time. Conversations with the AI partner, scenes and flashcards are on the spoken Polish page.

Questions and answers
How does the Polish B1 exam work?
First the written part: four modules — listening, reading, grammar and writing, at most 190 minutes in total. Then, on the same day or the next, the oral part of up to 15 minutes: the candidate draws a set of tasks and answers the examiners.
What tasks are in the B1 speaking part?
The exam regulation only sets the time and the draw of a task set. According to examiners' descriptions, a set has three tasks: describing a photo, a monologue on a topic and a role-play with the examiner. Official task sets are not publicly available.
What score do I need in the B1 exam and in the mock?
At least 50 % of the points in each written module and in the oral part. Failing one module means failing the exam. In the Talkfirst mock, “would pass” also starts at 50 %, for the oral part.
Do I need Polish B1 for residence and citizenship?
For the long-term EU resident permit you need Polish at B1 or higher: a state exam certificate or a school or university certificate with Polish as the language of instruction; children under 16 are exempt. For recognition as a Polish citizen (uznanie), the voivodes ask for the same: a State Commission certificate at B1 or higher, or a school certificate with Polish as the language of instruction.
How do I register for the Polish B1 exam?
You register with an exam organiser — a university, school or language centre authorised to run it — not with the Commission. The organiser enters you into the Commission's database, so register early. You pay the fee to the organiser; the Commission publishes session dates on certyfikatpolski.pl.
Can I take the mock exam for free?
Yes. On the Free plan, one full mock exam every 7 days, and single tasks within 35 voice minutes a week. On Pro, full mock exams with no weekly limit.
What does choosing Pan or Pani mean?
At the exam you are addressed formally, in the masculine or feminine form: czy Pan… or czy Pani…. You choose the form before you start, and the tasks and the examiner's lines use it. In situations with a friend or a colleague the conversation is informal, as the task says.
How far can I trust the score?
The official criteria and points for the oral part are not published, so the scale is ours, based on the B1 standard in the regulation. The AI scores the transcript of your answer: it is a forecast, not the Commission's decision. Pronunciation is not scored.
Is it for Ukrainians?
Yes. The app and all feedback come in Ukrainian, Russian or English: pick the language in your profile.
What changes in 2027?
On 1 January 2027 an amendment to the Polish Language Act takes effect (Dz.U. 2026 poz. 676), and a new regulation will set the exam rules. Anyone registered for the exam before 1 January 2027 takes it under the old rules.
