Short answer. A plain ChatGPT or Claude chat is a strong Polish conversation partner and explainer, but it keeps no record of what you've learned and doesn't score pronunciation word by word. Your own agent with the Talkfirst connector keeps the thinking and adds storage and delivery: vocabulary, recordings, reviews, progress and a plan it reads in every new chat.
Search for “best AI app to learn Polish” and you'll find lists of apps that each built their own AI tutor. There's another option that's easy to miss: use the AI you already have, Claude or ChatGPT, and give it the tools it lacks. This page compares the two honest variants — a plain chat, and your agent plus Talkfirst. For a comparison of standalone apps, see AI apps for speaking Polish and best apps to learn Polish.
What a plain chat does well
Start with the good part, because it's a lot:
- A partner on any topic. A clerk at the voivodeship office, a landlord, a recruiter — it plays any role and adjusts to your level.
- Explanations. Why it's kartę and not karta in Chcę złożyć wniosek o kartę pobytu., how aspect works, how to sound more polite — with examples.
- Rephrasing. You write it the way you'd say it, and it shows a more natural version.
- Role-play scenes you set up in a sentence.
- Voice mode for talking out loud instead of typing.
For a curious evening with Polish, that's enough. Ready-made prompts for it are in Polish with ChatGPT and Claude.
What it lacks over months
Memory as a record
The chat's memory holds notes about you, not a log: which words you learned, when you reviewed them, what's due today. A new chat starts almost from scratch, and in a long chat the early messages drop out. Words for the B1 exam have to come back on time, not sit in a chat from three weeks ago.
Hearing, not grading
Voice mode tries to understand you, not to evaluate you. It answers the meaning it understood, but it doesn't show your pauses, your hesitations or the words it had to guess. So mistakes in sounds — sz for ś, a missing nasal ę — and long pauses go unnoticed.
No word-by-word score
There's no pronunciation score per word, and “your pronunciation is great” from the assistant measures nothing.
Inconsistent corrections
Without rules in the prompt, corrections drift: one day every ending, the next day nothing. You can fix that with a prompt, but you have to repeat it in every new chat.
What Talkfirst gives your agent
Talkfirst doesn't try to be smarter than Claude. It's the place where everything you and the agent exchange while learning gets stored and delivered. Connected as an MCP connector, it gives the agent:
- Your cases, laid out. Pauses from word timing (before which word, how long), corrections, “Say it better” rephrasings by context, new words, weak words and response times (
word_stats), the history of quizzes and conversations. - A knowledge bank for your agent. Profile, notes and plan, which the agent reads at the start of every new chat with
today(),profile(),notes()andplan(). It knows your level, goal, words due today and what you agreed last time. - A vocabulary you can throw words into. “Save these ten from my landlord's email” — and they come back as flashcards and quizzes.
- A pronunciation window with a score for every word, right in the chat on the web and desktop.

A conversation review on the English course, a frame from our test setup, not a screenshot of a live chat. Reviews of Polish conversations look the same. This is the kind of data the agent reads afterwards.
What would take an agent long to build
Some things are not about intelligence but about prepared material:
- Polish decks by topic and level — from Gdzie jest przystanek? at A1 to rozmowa kwalifikacyjna at B1;
- conversation scenes with a partner and a review afterwards;
- ready-made Polish lessons with voices, at A1–A2 and B1;
- a mock B1 oral exam in the app's exams tab.
All of this also works without an agent, in the app in the browser or in Telegram. The agent makes it personal; the app makes it available on the tram.
How they fit together
The agent thinks and explains; Talkfirst stores, listens and delivers. A typical split:
- the agent reads your email from the office, saves the words and writes a lesson about the tricky case;
- you listen to the lesson on the way to work and do a quiz in Telegram;
- in the evening, a conversation in a scene; the review goes into the record;
- next time, the agent opens a new chat already knowing where you hesitated.
Look at my last conversations and quizzes and tell me the three things I should work on this week. Then save the words and make one short lesson.
I'm going to the office on Thursday to submit an application for a residence card. Prepare me: phrases, a pronunciation window for the hardest ones, and a practice conversation in the app.
And the memory part, in practice — a new chat a week later:
Let's continue where we stopped. What's due today, and what did we agree to focus on this week?
The agent reads today(), notes() and plan() and answers from them, not from a chat it can no longer see.
Here's a message from my colleague in Polish. Save the words I don't know and put them in my review for this week.
When a plain chat is enough
If you want to talk Polish now and then, ask about grammar, or prepare one conversation, a plain chat does it. The connector earns its place when you study for months, have a deadline like the B1 exam, or want your words and mistakes to stay in one place instead of fifty chat threads.

Questions
What is the best AI app to learn Polish?
It depends on how you study. A plain chat is a strong partner for occasional practice. For months of study, your own agent with the Talkfirst connector adds a vocabulary, review on schedule, word-by-word pronunciation scores and a plan the agent remembers.
Is Talkfirst a replacement for ChatGPT or Claude?
No. Talkfirst works with them as a connector: the agent thinks and explains, Talkfirst stores your words, recordings, reviews and progress and delivers practice in the app.
Can I use Talkfirst without an AI agent?
Yes. Decks, scenes, quizzes, lessons and the mock B1 oral exam work in the app in the browser and in Telegram.
Does a plain chat remember my Polish words?
Its memory keeps notes about you, not a log of words with dates. A new chat starts almost from scratch, so words you met once don't come back on their own.
